Edge is opening EVERY TIME I REBOOT!

Insidiously it is absent from all STARTUP control systems so we CAN'T STOP it.

Does congressional investigations of unfair trade practices do nothing?

How can microsoft be so trumpianly abusive?

    Hello,

Edge version 97.0.1072.62 contains the fix and will be installed per your regular update policies over the next day or so. If you'd like to force the update immediately, you can head over to edge://settings/help in the address bar or Settings > About Microsoft Edge and trigger the update manually.

If you've made any registry edits or GPO changes as mitigation, you can revert those after the update!

I blocked Edge in my firewall settings and now my default browser opens any Microsoft links I click on. Even the ones in settings.

    Hi Jon -

I'm Kevin B. Independent advisor and a Windows user like you. I do apologize for the inconvenience that you experiencing right now, let me help you sort things out.

Please try to follow the steps below and check if it will resolve your issue with Microsoft Edge opening after reboot.

    Method 1: Perform Clean Boot

    • This process will eliminate 3rd party application running in the background of your computer along with services that are not needed to run windows. If there's any conflicting 3rd party application that causes the issue on your computer, this process will stop it.
    1. Open the run box by pressing the Windows Key + R and type msconfig
    2. System Configuration Utility box will open and by default you are on general tab.
    3. On the General tab, click the selective startup and make sure that load system service and load startup items both have checked mark.
    4. Click on services tab
    5. Put a check mark on Hide All Microsoft Services > This is a very important part as if you miss to click on this, computer might not boot properly or permanently and will end up on clean installation.
    6. Once Hide all Microsoft Services have checked mark on it, click on Disable All
    7. Click on the Startup Tab and click open task manager. This will open another window which contains all your startup applications on the administrator account.
    8. Disable all application that you're not using. You can simply just click on them and select disable.
    9. Click OK , Apply and close the configuration utility

Method 2: Remove Microsoft Edge from Startup Folder

    • Startup folder contains application and shortcuts which opens automatically when computer starts. Please check and make sure that folder does not have Microsoft Edge inside.
    1. Open the Run Box by pressing the windows key + r then type shell:Startup then press enter.
    2. Folder will open, please check and delete if there's any shortcut links or if Microsoft Edge is showing on the folder
    3. Close the Startup Folder and Restart your computer

Method 3: Delete the contents of Active Folder in C Drive

    • Deleting the contents of active folders in Microsoft Edge will stop Edge from opening during startup. To do that please Follow the steps below.
    1. Open the Run Box by pressing the windows key + r
    2. Navigate to the below path:

    C:\Users\UserName\Appdata\local\packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\MicrosoftEdge\User\Default\Recovery\Active

Note: Change the UserName that corresponds to the user name of your profile on the computer.

    1. Delete the contents of that folder.

Restart your computer and Microsoft Edge should not be opening anymore during startup.

Feel free to reach back to us if you need further assistance

Hope this will help and have a bless day!

    Thanks.

    Hey there Jon,

I know this was posted a while ago but it looks like a lot of folks are landing on this thread via search so I want to make sure you and other folks landing here can stop Edge from appearing when you don't want it.

Try this change in Windows Settings:

    1. Go to Start  > Settings .
    2. Select Accounts > Sign-in options.
    3. Turn off Automatically save my restartable apps when I sign out and restart them when I sign in.
