Why does Windows 11 force you to use Microsoft Edge?

Hello there,

I heard this complaint from a lot of people, but why does Windows 11 force people to use Microsoft Edge?

It's not that the browser is bad, it is actually very nice. There is a couple of problem though.

Like, if you type into Bing '' chrome install '' or something similar, this is what happens:

That is a bit annoying isn't it?

Because when people see this message it gives them the feeling that they're being forced to do something.

Second of all, you could give a chance to install something and then use it to open any internet link you want.

For example, if I had Chrome on my laptop as a default browser ,(which is tricky to set in the first place), and I click on a link that was

on a Microsoft widget it still opens in Edge.

That technically means that Chrome is not my default browser at all because it doesn't open everything.

So what's the point of having the "Default Browser" option anyways?

Last of all, I would kindly suggest to make Windows 12 NOT force you to use Edge.

Or, in simpler words, make it more similar to Windows 10.

Kind Regards,

Sebastian J.J.

    Edge is not secure compared to Chrome or Firefox. Firefox is the most secure browser. Edge is spying you.

    Stop Using Edge. Btw, IE was the most popular browser and Microsoft discontinnued it.

    I have heard of this very same issue with other people. I thought Thought Facebook and Twitter were the only ones doing the controlling. Must be the trend these days with Big Tech.

    Hello Sebastian,welcome to the Microsoft community, I'll be happy to help you today;

    Microsoft recommends the use of Edge to users because it is Microsoft's default browser, and also because it is linked to other system resources and applications;

    The only way to make Windows 11 use your default browser for all situations is through third-party software, however this is at your own risk:

    Hello again,

    Thank you for your answer, though it does open websites like Google on the browser, what I do mean is that it only opens edge://

    links or other websites, not chrome:// links. And one question, does Windows 11 want you to use Edge because it's more safe or something?

    Because if it is, then I will definitely stick to Edge for some time

    Also, I will NOT install third-party software because I already learnt my lesson about that when I downloaded some weird app whilst trying to move the taskbar on the left, right or up the screen! I had to reset it with the help of an engineer, which worked and it happened to the laptop I'm using now!

    Thank you again for your advice.

    Kind Regards,

    Sebastian JJ

    Dear Sebastian,I understand that some links are opened by Edge instead of the default browser;

    As I reported earlier, Microsoft recommends using Edge because it is more secure compared to other browsers and also because it is linked to other system resources and applications;

    If you need help with anything else don't hesitate to post here again;

    See you soon!
