Edge keeps pinning website on the taskbar on its own

Couple of months ago, I was trying out the 'pin to taskbar' feature on Windows 10, but it didn't seem to work correctly and the icons used to disappear after a while, but right clicking on the empty space still opened a menu. I stopped using them for good after a while. But for the past week, Edge has been showing the same websites, but only when they are open in the browser, on the taskbar by itself and right clicking on them doesn't show the 'unpin from taskbar' option. When I pin them again using the feature, the 'unpin from taskbar' now appears on the menu and unpins the website. But they appear again after a while and disappear when the tab is closed in the browser.

I have also tried reinstalling the browser by running the setup file but that doesn't seem to fix it. How can I fix this?

Hi Vaibhav. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

I'll give you everything possible to fix Edge so something should work:

    1. If possible back up your Favorites first in Edge Hub (three dots top right of browser) > Favorites > Manage Favorites > Export to file: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/143983-how-...

If you can't open Edge but another browser will open, then go into it's Settings to try to "Import from another Browser" your Edge Favorites so they are at least backed up.

    1. You can reset new Edge in Edge Settings > Reset Settings.
    2. If you can't open Edge or if the Edge Reset doesn't work then go into Windows Settings > Apps > Apps & Features > Microsoft Edge > Modify > Repair.
    3. Try re-registering Edge from Option 2 here: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3175-apps-re...
    4. If none of those repairs help try the additional repairs here:

    6) If nothing for Edge works then try these fixes for Task Bar:

    1. Go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows_10-performance/windows-10-performance-and-install-integrity/75529fd4-fac7-4653-893a-dd8cd4b4db00

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 17 to test a new Local Admin account. Then if necessary continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

    1. If nothing else works then do a Repair Install, by installing Media Creation Tool, open tool and choose to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows while keeping files, programs and most settings in place, is the most stable method to advance to the latest version, and solves most problems. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.

Hi Greg, I have tried all of the Edge fixes, a few of the taskbar fixes. But none of them seem to work. Do you have any more suggestions?

Are you sure you're not seeing the icons appear on task bar because the apps are open? Those are not pinned, they're just opened at the time.

This is not reported that often to be unstable. I've never had a taskbar icon pin or unpin without my doing it. Nor do I see any reports of this.

If you want To report this bug to Microsoft use the Feedback Hub app in Start Menu where developers are tasked to process consumer feedback. They will not even see it here. This is a tech forums staffed mostly by volunteers trying to help with your problems.

Finish all steps in my last post so you know the problem isn't taskbar or Windows.

Yeah you're right. I shouldn't call them pinned but that they just appear on the taskbar while the website is open on Edge.

I'll try a few fixes you suggested and then report this through Ffedback Hub if they don't work. Thanks for your help!
