Win11 paired to new TV, but Cast panel says the device is not available

I just installed a new Sony XR42A90K in replacement of an older Sony. I paired it to my Win11 laptop and confirmed the pairing and connection on both the TV and the laptop. However, when I try to Cast, the response is that the device is not available.

I had no problems Casting to my older Sony XBR-43X800E.

Can anyone suggest a way to fix this?

    Hi TomBloch,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

If you're experiencing issues with casting to your new Sony XR42A90K TV from your Windows 11 laptop, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the problem:

    1. Update firmware and drivers: Ensure that your Sony XR42A90K TV has the latest firmware installed. Visit the Sony support website and search for your TV model to find any available updates. Additionally, make sure your laptop has the latest network drivers installed. Check the manufacturer's website or use Windows Update to install any available driver updates.
    2. Check firewall and antivirus settings: It's possible that your firewall or antivirus software is blocking the casting connection. Temporarily disable any third-party firewall or antivirus programs on your laptop and try casting again. If it works, you can adjust the settings of your security software to allow the necessary connections.

Disclaimer: Follow these steps to temporarily turn off real-time Microsoft Defender antivirus protection in Windows Security. However, keep in mind that if you do so, your device may be vulnerable to threats. So please turn on it immediately once issue fixed.

    1. Reset the network settings on your TV: On your Sony XR42A90K TV, go to the settings menu and find the network settings. Look for an option to reset the network settings or perform a network reset. This will clear any saved network configurations and allow you to set up the connection again from scratch.

    4. Verify compatibility: Double-check that the Sony XR42A90K TV supports the casting method you're trying to use. While Windows 11 generally supports casting, it's possible that the new TV may have specific requirements or limitations. Refer to the TV's user manual or contact Sony support for further assistance.

    1. Check Cast Settings on TV: On your Sony TV, go to the settings and find the Cast (Screen Mirroring) options. Make sure it is enabled and set to "Always allow" or "Prompt" (if available).
    2. Contact Sony support: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's recommended to reach out to Sony support directly. They can provide specific guidance based on your TV model and help troubleshoot the casting issue further.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the problem and successfully cast to your new Sony XR42A90K TV from your Windows 11 laptop.

If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Your Sincerely

The problem has been resolved, though not in a way I expected. I had contacted Sony Support and they told me that I needed to disconnect the Ethernet cable between the TV and my router and configure the wireless connection instead. I couldn't understand why that would make a difference but I did it. That resolved two problems I was having on my Android smartphone. Google TV and Xfinity Remote apps could not detect the TV even though it was paired and joined.

This afternoon I thought I would test the Google TV app. I was compelled to go through th Google TV setup process, which I had not done when setting up the TV. It wasn't mandatory and I didn't think I'd need it. Sony Support never asked it I completed the Google TV setup on the TV.

Anyway, when I tried Casting from my laptop again it showed the TV as available and casting actually worked. Works from the smartphone too.

Hopefully this information will benefit others.

    Hi Tom,

I'm glad to hear that the issue has been resolved! It's interesting that the solution involved configuring the wireless connection instead of using the Ethernet cable. Sometimes, certain features or apps on smart TVs require a wireless connection to function properly, and it seems that was the case with the Google TV and Xfinity Remote apps in your situation.

Additionally, completing the Google TV setup process likely enabled some necessary settings or services that allowed for proper casting from your laptop and smartphone. Configuring the TV correctly for the intended features and apps can indeed make a significant difference in the overall functionality.

Thank you for sharing your experience and the steps you took to resolve the problem. It's great to know that this information may help others who encounter similar issues with their smart TVs and casting capabilities. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask!

    Your Sincerely
