I edited a photo (some cropping & brightening) with Windows Live Photo Gallery.

after saving the picture I've noticed that the picture thumbnail was NOT updated.

same thing happened when I edited the photo with Faststone.

Hi Cherizli,

Welcome to Microsoft Answers Forums.

a.     May I know the picture file type, for which thumbnail is not updated after editing?

b.     Does the issue occur with all your photos?

Method 1: -

I’d suggest you to perform Disk Cleanup, cleaning up your temporary internet files, thumbnail, cookies and temp files, so as to check the thumbnail view of the photo is updated by cleaning up your temporary data.

1.     Click on Start Orb, type Disk Cleanup in to the Search box and then press Enter.

2.     Check "Thumbnails" and then click OK.

3.     Click "Delete Files" button.

Please see Disk Cleanup for more information.

Method 2: -

If the above method does not help, delete the thumbcache_*.db files in the following folder (you can copy the following location in to the Search box directly)

%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

Method 3: -

If the issue still exists, please see if it occurs in other user accounts.

Hope this information helps you.

Regards,

Yaaser - Microsoft Support Engineer

seems after the sp1 update all my file type defaults have changed, they were set at office picture manager and were change to windows photo viewer, i don't know if it's related to thumbnails not refreshing.

But you can try, open your library, click on organize, and the views tab and check the top listing show icons and never thumbnails, and save.

Boot your computer and reset it back and see if it will do anything.

    Hi Geoffc 1,

Did you try to turn off the thumbnails listings in organize, and view and check show icons and never thumbnails, and then boot, and then reactivate the thumbnails setting to see if it would regenerate ?

Also was the size list correct when the thumbnails were not showing the changes applied ?

Also what program do you have selected to be the default file type for these and regular jpg's...wlpg ?

this happens to all photos. All formats.

Brand new computer, Windows Premium Home Edition, and the above suggestion has no bearing on the problem.

    Please come up with something.

Also how to add items to your right click menu. This is an additional annoyance.

    Thank you for listening.

This is good news - it looks as though the cause of this problem has been found. In my particular case, I know that the images in question were scans that I had cropped using Paint.NET, yet the Windows Explorer continued to show the uncropped thumbnail.

This may have been a bug in an earlier version of Paint.NET - I must go back and test the files with the latest version to see if the issue is resolved.

Kudos to Kresho123 for the explanation!
