Windows Update Error 80072efd. (windowsupdate_80072efd)

Question

Hi, I have been having numerous problems with the Windows Update Error 80072efd. I have tried every solution to no avail.

Initially I was getting the “Windows Update error 80070002”. So I followed the solution as proposed by Microsoft. Namely I stopped the Windows Update service, deleted temporary update files, and restarted the Windows Update service. But then when restarting Windows Update I ended up receiving this lovely new error called WindowsUpdate_80072EFD. I tried restoring the computer to a time before I had received any of these problems, but I still got this error.  I tried to solve it by turning off the firewall and by waiting 30 minutes before updating again, but to no avail. Then I added these sites as trusted sites in the security of internet explorer

https://*.update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com

I then created a new rule in the advanced windows firewall that allows the program: wuapp. In the basic windows firewall, i added wuapp as an exception. Again, to no avail. So I clicked on the Start menu, selected Run and type the following: regsvr32 Dssenh.dll Gpkcsp.dll Slbcsp.dll Sccbase.dll  This gave me a window that said: "The module "Gpkcsp.dll" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .dll files. The specified module could not be found."I then uninstalled the anti-virus (because I couldn’t disable it) and still received the same error. I then added these sites as trusted sites in the security of internet explorer

I read somewhere to run the Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773), but no such updates exist for vista. I then created a coupld new rules for windows firewall: outbound rule for a TCP Port of the number 65,55,184,125, an inbound rule for a TCP Port of the number 65,55,184,125, an outbound rule for a UDP Port of the number 65,55,184,125, and an outbound rule for a UDP Port of the number 65,55,184,125. Again, to no avail. I read that I should disable any software accelerators, but to the best of my knowledge I don't actually have any. Any help would be appreciated.

Problem: When you try to use Windows Update or update Windows Defender to check for and install updates, you receive one of the following error messages:

Windows Defender error code 0x80072efd

Windows Update **** error code 80072efd

The following solution worked for me on a PC running Vista SP1. This was after all of the other suggestions provided by Microsoft Support at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 did not work.

Solution (Vista SP 1):

1. Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
2. Right-click “Command Prompt” Run as administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Type "netsh winhttp reset proxy" (without quotes) at the command prompt, and press Enter.
4. Try the update again.

They do offer a long list of things to try.

Besides the firewall/AV ones, there are some advanced methods in the second 1/2 of the above link.

The solution to my last problem regarding getting the screen: "!! 0xc01a001d !! 288342/89953 (\Registry\Machine\COMPONENTS\DerivedData..." (without the quotes) was fairly simple. I just inserted the reinstall DVD for Windows Vista and then selected repair. That may have actually worked for all the other problems I mentioned, I just hadn't thought of trying it till now.

Your solution helped me out. Can't believe that I have 131 Critical updates missing! Yea..it's been that long since Vista update started to go nuts. For a moment, I was thinking that it was Microsoft way of slowly phasing out Vista. Ooops...I hope I didn't give them any ideas now.

I only use Nortons and S&D and had already removed them, added the links to IE, deleted files and spin my laptop 5 times counter clockwise and nothing helped! lol
