earlier,i was sucessfully using the same hard drive with xp....for over a period of 2 months, &never had any problem!!

but now with win7, as soon i try to acess it(S 320gb), a popup baloon from MSoft Windows comes saying,-                 (you need to format the disc in drive H: before you can use it,  D you want to format it"...............;'and thereafter when i click on cancel, again comes a balloon showing,   "H:\ is not accessible.   data error (cyclic redundancy check).

before upgrading , i tranfered all my data to my Seagate 320Gb ext. hard drive, so that, after installation of win7,i can access & move  my data, back to my pc ......after transfering all my data ,i format my internal hard drives, and installed a fresh copy of windows 7.  but  now i m in big trouble, as i cant access  the ext.H.D.   !!

almost perplexed, i dont knw what n how to do !

is there anybody, who knows wat has gone wrong and how to fix this?? i'll be highly obilized ,guys,,plzzzzz help.

    Hi neo_yyx,

    Welcome to Microsoft answers!

The error data error (cyclic redundancy check) -- This message indicates that the operating system has found a drive with bad sectors or some other intermittent problem.

This is usually caused by hard drive hardware problems.

You may check the drive for any errors and bad sectors, if any, and check if that fixes the issue.

You can solve some computer problems by checking a drive or drives for errors. For example, you can check your computer's primary hard disk to fix some performance issues, or you can check an external hard drive if it's not working properly.

    1. Open Computer by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Computer.
    2. Right-click the drive that you want to check, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check now. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select Automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will report problems but not fix them.

To perform a thorough check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This scan attempts to find and repair physical errors on the drive itself, and it can take much longer to complete.

To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

    1. Click Start.

Depending on the size of your drive, this might take several minutes. For best results, don't use your computer for any other tasks while it is checking for errors.

Please note that if there are any bad sectors found during check disk, there could be data doss.

    Hi Guys

The same problem has happened to me too. However, I happen to run Ubuntu Linix 11.10 on my

machine, I can access the the Seagate External Hard Disk drive without any error message.

My Windows 7 started showing this error message a couple of days ago, then I shutdown Windows and rebooted to run Linux Ubuntu 11.10 then accessed the drive every single file sitting there with no error at all.

If you want to recover all files use UBUNTU LINUX 11.10 for Win 32 bit or http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download to choose 64 bit. Hopefully you will get all your files working perfectly on Linux OS. Linux is free to download and install, especially Ubuntu Linux 11.10 is beautiful, powerfull OS that you can install on Windows the same way you install other software. Here is a link to wubi.exe Windows installer. Run wubi.exe, Install, reboot and select Ubuntu when the system lets you choose which OS to boot. The above links let you download Ubuntu Linux 11.10 but if you want latest version Ubuntu Linux 12.04 a new release at the time of this writing direct link towubi.exe windows installer or http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer. Run wubi.exe to install and follow installation instructions on Ubunut's website. Hope it helps someone. Please post back if it worked for you. I believe it should work. Good luck.
