I already checked on the persissions, i am logged on as administartor, UAC turned off.

There was a bad uninstall of the product, had to run "Windows Installer Cleanup" because was receiving message "already installed" at setup.

Now i have this Error 1402. Something else i need to clean up before reinstallation?

Thank you for any advice.

Jean-Luc

    RESOLVED!

(Error 1402 while attempting to re-install Office 2003 on Vista Home Professional)

This was resolved for me by running the "Fix-It" that resets registry security settings.  It is at the following knowledgebase article:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222

    Then re-run the install

    Hi,

Can I join in the fun?  I have the same problem that JL Dubois has.  Possibly.  With Vista Home premium on a 64bit Gateway, I run Office professional 2003.  I have had Outlook 2003 crash recently 2 to 5 times daily.  It just restarts with some error about "microsoft outlook is not responding" or the like.  So, I decided maybe a clean install would be good.  I couldn't find an uninstall only for outlook 2003 so I uninstalled all of office pro.  Here is what happened.

    1.  Ran uninstall Office professional using the control panel "add remove programs"

    2.  Put my office 2003 professional "enterprise edition 2003" (End Item Part No. 269-06937) in and ran setup.

    3.  After selecting full install it loaded some files and then cam up with the following error window:

    Microsoft Office 2003 Setup

Error 1402.  Setup cannot open the registry key

    UNKNOWN\Components\932C050505A9ECD394C8535DD944B6F04\9

040110900063D11C8EF10054038389c.  Verify that youhave sufficient permissions to access the registry or contact your

    Information Technology Department for assistance.

    4.  I am an administrator.  I turned of UAC (User Account Control)

    5.  Re-ran setup - same error

    6.  I opened the registry and this key did not exist.  No key with the word \Components\93...  existed.

    7.  I ran msconfig, as you suggested above, and clean booted.

    8.  Re-ran setup - same error.

What else can I tell you to be of more assistance in solving our problem?

    Thank you.

Is there a similar fix for Windows 7?  I'm having trouble with Office 2007.  Same error code (1402).

Same here. After upgrading from Vista to Windows 7, Office 2003 would open an install window everytime I opened a file. It would continue and work, but it took extra time and I was annoying. So I tried to remove, but it failed so I ran windows clean-up (I had to go to safe mode to make it complete). Then when I tried to re-install I get the registry key error. The fix-it tool doesn't work win Win 7.

    Hi Jean,

    Welcome to Windows Forums!

I would like to gather more information to have a better clarity on the issue you have posted.

    ·             Which application did you try to uninstall?

    ·             From when are you getting this error?

    ·             Which application are you trying to reinstall?

    ·             When do you get the error 1402?

Try to place your computer in clean boot mode and check if the issue persists. To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows Vista or Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot."

A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts. This article describes how to troubleshoot problems in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 by performing a clean boot.

Steps to put your computer in clean boot:

    1. Click Start
    2. Type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    1. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
    2. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
    3. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
    4. Click OK.
    5. When you are prompted, click Restart.
    6. After the computer starts, check if you are still getting the same error.

How to perform a clean boot procedure to determine whether background programs are interfering with a game or a program that you currently use **** http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

NOTE : PLACE YOUR COMPUTER BACK TO NORMAL STARTUP AFTER YOU TRY THE ABOVE STEPS.

Click Start, in the start search box type msconfig and press enter.

Choose Normal Startup and press Apply and OK
