I changed the "hosts" file name to 'hosts.test" and I'm no longer experiencing a hanging Explorer. How strange is that?

Should I do something else, or is this enough? I have no idea how to create a new hosts file as is suggested in the answer below.

Answer:

·         HOSTS File

o   There is a possibility entries could have been added into the HOSTS file, to test this:

§  Open ‘My computer’

§  Open the ‘C’ drive (or the drive Windows is installed to)

§  Open the Windows folder (or the folder Windows is installed to)

§  Open the System32 folder

§  Open the Drivers Folder

§  Open the ETC folder

§  Rename the HOSTS file to hosts.test

·         Note the HOSTS file does not have an extension by default

Test to see if the delay still exists with Internet Explorer.

If there is no longer a delay a new hosts file can be created, or the existing hosts file can be modifified.

Below is an example of the default HOSTS file:

Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.

This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.

This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each

entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should

be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.

The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one

space.

Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual

lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.

For example:

#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server

#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

127.0.0.1       localhost

::1             localhost

    Hi bigfootmm,

To create a new hosts file, open a new Notepad file and save it as "hosts" and change file type to All files.  Copy and paste this into the Notepad and save it.  Once finished, move it to the old file's location.
