Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home, full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

    Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

So let me get this straight.  Microsoft chose not to support BluRay playback, by design.  And your advise, as a Microsoft rep., is to get third party software, which Microsoft does not recommend ?     I am more than a little surprised by your answer.   Why has Microsoft, by design, not supported BluRay playback.

Please don't say because of codecs, that is not an answer. It is well within Microsoft capabilities to come up with codecs that will allow Windows 7 to play back BluRay.  I don't think I need to tell you that there are hundreds of thousands of people who will be affected by my problem and it deserves a better answer than what you have given me.

No, your information was not useful. You bring out Windows 7 as a solution to Vista's shortcomings but, by design, continue with those shortcomings Because Microsoft has to pay royalitys, you chose not to include an impotant part of WMP. I have opened and used my Windows 7 software, so I can not return it but I can blog and you will be sorry for this omission. As you can see, one other person has already agreed with me on this blog, there will soon be thousands.  Microsoft is NOT short of money so don't give me any of that BS.

As Forrest Gump said "Stupid is as stupid does." Why can't you understand it is protected by a PATENT. They cannot include something in their software that isn't theirs to sell you. If you really want to watch your Blu Ray discs then BUY A PROGRAM stupid!

sounds good...BUT..I already have a blu ray player, so buying one just for the software seems silly, and, you better check to make sure that's not a trial version, and only good for 30 days! lol (that's how my computer came.)

Hello and thanks for the advice and pointing it out. I have checked the CYBERLINK POWER DVD 10 PLAYER software that came with my LG BD ROM - DVD ReWriter, and it is NOT the trial version. I am happy with CYBERLINK Power DVD 10....... but the problem still remains with Microsoft`s Windows Media Player. I have set as default the Power DVD 10 and not using media player anymore as it is useless when it comes to BLUERAY DISCS.

Did your computer come with a Utilities Disc? If yes, you might have the software for your BLUERAY player there. If not, try the manufacturers website, they might have a downloadable solution for your Computer.

Four Years ago I had a bad experience with my last attempt to purchase a ready built PC from my local Superstore, and after a lot of fuss and frustration from them I managed to get a full refund for it. After that I never trusted ready made computers, so I decided to build my own PC.

    my system:

Case Cooler Master HAF 922, Asus P7P55D PREMIUM ATX motherboard, Intel Quad core I7 860 CPU, Corsair Dominator memory 8GB 1333 > 1800 DDR3 dual channel, Corsair H100i dual fan double rad liquid CPU cooler, GPU Asus GTX660 Factory Oveclocked, HD OCZ AGILITY 120GB SSD, LG BLUERAY DVD RW + 2X SONY DVDRW, CREATIVE Sound Blaster Z series 5.1 PCIe sound card, OS WIN7 PRO 64-bit, AKASA PSU 1000W

i totally agree with what you are saying too, it is pointless having a new operating system that wont support upto date media formats.

    get it sorted microsoft
