    Hi demetman,

Welcome to Microsoft Answers Community site.

Follow the steps below to set your desktop background and choose the picture to fit the display screen

    1. Open Desktop Background by clicking the Start button ![](http://res2.windows.microsoft.com/resbox/en/Windows Vista/Main/4/f/4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33/4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33.png), clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, clicking Personalization, and then clicking Desktop Background.
    2. Click the picture or color you want for your desktop background.

If the picture you want to use is not in the list of desktop background pictures, click the Picture location down arrow to view other categories, or click Browse to search for the picture on your computer. When you find the picture you want, double-click it. It will become your desktop background and appear in the list of desktop backgrounds.

    1. Under How should the picture be positioned, choose to have the picture fit the screen, tile, or be centered on the screen, and then click OK, here you can choose fit the screen.

Let me know if that work. Good luck!

    Hope this information is helpful.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Vijay KKS

This worked just right, thanks! The only thing was that under the control panel I had only 'Personalization', not 'Appearance and Personalization'. That's it, though!

    Thanks!

I did what you suggest, but after I chose the photo and it displayed  too big again, I tried to find the "How should the picture be positioned? But I could not find it, so I am nowhere nearer to the answer ? Where can I find the place to choose "fit to screen" ?

I had the same problem as you and I just figured it out...after clicking the personalization, where it lists all the themes you can use as background picture...at the bottom, if your system is like mine, it will show 4 icons at the bottom (Desktop background, window color, sounds & screen saver). I clicked the link that showed my selected picture (the icon that said desktop background at the bottom) and that's where it opened up the thing about how the picture should be positionned. I put it to "fit" and it worked alright enough that I can now see the faces on my background picture and not just the torsos. lol. Hope this helps.

    P.S.: I use windows 7

I had just about given up but when your suggestion arrived I decided to try again. As before I got to where I was to select a picture (which I had put in two locations because of previous problems) but when I clicked on Documents as a location, the picture wasn't there. Same thing happened when I clicked on My Pictures. I finally right clicked on the picture itself in Documents and was able to send it to desktop as background and then reduced it to fit the Center. Then the background color changed. Seemed as though I could have one or the other! Obviously I'm doing something wrong because Windows 7 couldn't be the reason for the complication.

Life was so much simpler with XP!

    Thanks
