    Hi Frank,

    Welcome to Microsoft Windows Forums!

I would like to gather more information regarding the issue.

Ø  Are you getting this error while downloading or installing?

Ø  Which application are you trying to download?

In the meantime you try these method.

Try to place your computer in clean boot mode and check if the issue persists. To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows Vista or Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts. This article describes how to troubleshoot problems in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 by performing a clean boot.

Steps to put your computer in clean boot:

    1. Click Start
    2. Type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    1. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
    2. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
    3. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
    4. Click OK.
    5. When you are prompted, click Restart.
    6. After the computer starts, check if the issue persists.

NOTE: PLACE YOUR COMPUTER BACK TO NORMAL STARTUP AFTER YOU TRY THE ABOVE STEPS.

Click Start, in the start search box type msconfig and press enter.

Choose Normal Startup and press Apply and OK

How to perform a clean boot procedure to determine whether background programs are interfering with a game or a program that you currently use ****http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

    Hi guys,

I have found a work around for this problem.First of all it means that another software is trying to install (maybe a windows update) so it prevent you from running multiple installations at the same time

    Here is the solution :

1-Disable Windows Automatic Updates (just for now) and reboot your computer

    2-Install Unlocker from here : ( http://adf.ly/HhpfP )

3-Go to Windows\Installer folder and right click on the Installer folder and choose  "Unlocker"

4-It will show you the files in use then you can unlock them then delete them !

5-Reboot your computer and VOILA!!! you can install any software now !

It is better to delete only the files that cause the problem not all Installer folder contents as you may need them for repair or installing patches

Please let me know if it worked for you ;-)

The above steps from other users (e.g. deleting the registry key, stopping/starting the Windows Installer Service) did not work for me.  The short explanation is that I had something forcing an installation that was always failing or getting stuck.  By uninstalling that software, I was able to fix my system.

    The long explanation:

In my situation, I had two msiexec.exe processes starting.  If I killed these, they would be restarted within 5-10 seconds.

What I wound up doing was killing those two processes and then immediately installing the software I was trying to install.  The good software install would finally start and not have the Error 1500 "Another Installation is in Progress" error.  While the good installer was running, a dialog box would pop up that said:

"User 'SYSTEM' has previously initiated an install for product 'OMCI'. That user will need to run that install again before they can use that product. Your current install will now continue."

After clicking OK, a second dialog box would pop up that said:

"Error 1704. An installation for OMCI is currently suspended. You must undo the changes made by that installation to continue. Do you want to undo those changes?"

I clicked Yes, and then it undid the changes to OMCI and finally installed my good software package!!

The final solution was to discover that *something* on my system was continually trying to force installation of OMCI (the Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation).  I went to the Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and uninstalled OMCI.  At first, this gave me the error message about another installation being in progress.  Once again I killed the two msiexec.exe programs and then immediately uninstalled OMCI.  This time I successfully uninstalled OMCI!!!

Now my computer was finally fixed!

    This is on Windows XP.

    this worked for me:

    1. type "regedit.exe" in your Start -> Run command prompt and press enter.
    2. go to folder \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Installer and open the default value. if you dont have "Installer" folder, check \Currentversion\Installer
    3. empty the data in it (if its not already empty)
    4. type "services.msc" in Start -> Run
    5. find "Windows Installer", right click on it and select Start.

nothing seems to happen but now you'll be able to run your install!
