Socket 10013 error when trying to connect some programs

Question

I am trying to connect Pokerstars form my laptop but I am getting a socket 10013 connection error.  How do I fix this?

Windows 7, 64 bit, laptop.

wireless internet with router.

up to date drivers

what I have done so far:

restarted laptop, refreshed modem and router

allowed access from windows firewall for the program for outgoing and incoming connections, for private and public domains. (my network is public as I live on a farm)

turned off windows firewall to check if it works (doesn't).  turned back on.

I can access internet from internet explorer, msn messenger and some programs.  I downloaded the install file, but when I click on the program to start it I get this connection error.  My husband is running the same program from his wireless laptop with no problems (vista).  Here is the log file from the program if that helps.

Hi JBotterill,

A socket error 10013 can be caused by antivirus or firewall software. Basically, a needed socket connection is being denied. Socket error 10013 is a message which implies that a port is blocked and/or unreachable.

From your post I understand that you’ve already tried by turning-ff the firewall and configuring the same to allow access.

Let’s also disable antivirus software and Firewall together (as a test) on the computer temporarily and try connecting and check if things get any better.

Note: Make sure you turn-on the antivirus software and Windows Firewall later.

If disabling antivirus software works, then you'll need to configure the same so that it no longer interferes.

Thanks for replying!

Turns out that the program that was blocking internet access was Windows Defender.  I have disabled the program and everything is working fine now.  Thanks again!

I've got the same problem, when i have installed firewall ZoneAlarm.

AND! turn firewall off is not enough. Socket Error 10013 is still there.

When i uninstall ZA, problem was solved.

Windows defender is off but nothing works unless I turn off my fire wall how do I fix this?
