Event id 1542, User Profile Service and Missing Classes Root Key

Question

Hello,

OS: Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 32bit

Symptoms:

Assosications are not being kept across reboots (among others)

Details:

HKEY_USERS\HKEY_USERS\MySID_Classes is missing on reboot

Event viewer says:

Event id 1542, User Profile Service

Windows cannot load classes registry file.

DETAIL - The system cannot find the file specified.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\hivelist doesn't have an entry for

\REGISTRY\USER\MySID_Classes UsrClass.dat file

Opening the registry and manually loading the UsrClass.dat hive under the HKEY_USERS works :)

It is almost as the same as http://www.dabcc.com/article.aspx?id=9762 (exluding the outlook of course)

Thinks i have not tested: Restore mode (cause it is disabled)

 Thank you for the reply.  For this specific issue I would suggest submiting a form to: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/aa497440.aspx.  This will be looked at by Microsoft Developer Network team.  Please keep me posted for resolution or if problem is resolved.

Hello again,

Since i had also a problem with a XenoCode appliance, playing with process mon i found out that the User Shell Folders

registry key was missing :) ( HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-XXX\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders )

Copying they key from a different user work like a charm and no more Missing Classes Root Key

I am having the exact same issue... Can you plz tell me exactly how to fix it?  (how to manually load the usrclass.dat hive under hkey_users)

Hello James,

Thanks for your update.

I checked the kb and the CLSID is there.

Have a look on the following screen shoots

The first is after i reboot the machine you will see that classes hive is missing.

The winlogon.exe process should automatically load the UsrClass.dat file.

Do we have a way to debug the user profile service, or winlogon.exe process in order to see why we get the event id 1542 error on the event viewer ?

 Thank you for using Microsoft Windows Vista Forums.

 I have been looking into this issue and checked out the link you provided.  I see exactly what you are saying when the "HKEY_USERS\HKEY_USERS\MySID_" classes is missing on reboot.    I have attached a link that shows how to correct this issue manually (which you have been doing) as well as how to correct this each time you log off/on.  Please let me know if this has helped or if you are still having any issues.
