How do I tell if I have Java 32 bit or 64 bit installed in Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit?

Due to a problem with Java updates I had to uninstall the said program. I downloaded what I thought was a 64 bit version from their site, but now in the control panel beside the Java emblem it reads (32-bit) How do I tell if I mistakenly downloaded the 32 bit version or the 64 bit one? I have both the 32 and 64 bit versions of IE on my machine, but have both program versions toggled off so they won't boot. I use Google Chrome as my browser and Hotmail for e-mail. (Looking at the files they all seem correct to me as both 32 and 64 bit) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Peace!

I realize this question has been answered, but here's some additional info for future visitors:

  • Go to the command prompt
  • Type "java -version" and press enter
  • If you are running Java 64-bit the output should include "64-Bit"

Keep in mind that you may have multiple versions of Java installed on your system. I have 3, e.g.:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\java
  • C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\java
  • C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_51\bin

So while my default version of Java is 32-bit, I also have a 64-bit version of Java installed.

Architecture: x86

That means that this is the 32-bit version of Java.

Windows 7 64-bit has two versions of Internet Explorer.  The 32-bit version is the default.  If that's what you're running, everything is OK.

To run the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer, click Start > All Programs   > Internet Explorer (64-bit) .  When you install Java in that browser, it will be the 64-bit version.

I have Java 64 bit JVM installed on my Windows 7 machine. I have installed 32 bit Java version as well because I need it for some applications that only work with 32 bit JVM. I change the JAVA_HOME and PATH environment variables to point to the new 32 bit Java location and tried to add the new Java path to the Java Control Panel. The new Java version can be found but is not preserved  in the Java runtime environment settings when I try to add it in. Moreover when I enter 'java  -version' at a DOS command line I always see windows reporting back that it sees the 64 bit version:

    java version "1.6.0_26"

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03)

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode)

    Regards,

    David

Go to the How do I test whether Java is working on my computer? page.  When the test runs, see what it shows for Architecture .  Possible values are:

       x86 - 32-bit

       amd64 - 64-bit
