Windows 7 Pro PPTP VPN error 807 and will not connect to remote server, XP machine connects no problems

I'm just configuring my new windows 7 laptop (Dell Precision M4400) running windows 7 professional and VPNs are not working, they always bomb out with error 807.  " The connection between your computer and the VPN server was interrupted."

I have created a PPTP dial-up connection so I can connect back to my workplace and when connecting I continually receive a 807 error.

To verify my internet etc is working I connected to the same location via my existing XP laptop (DELL precision M4300) that has identical VPN settings.  Everything connects aok.

I am also running ESET as my anti-virus and firewall and have disabled this for testing (normally I have no problems running this and is also running on my XP laptop).  I've also confirmed that the windows firewall is off.

I'm connecting via Wireless at home, internet is working fine, firewall has not changed at either end (I manage both ends) and as mentioned is working for my XP machine also running over wireless.

Have you or the server administrator looked at the logs on the VPN server to see if you have any clues or the event viewer on your Win 7 client?

This is the take on that error code from MSFT...

*807 The network connection between your computer and the VPN server was interrupted. This can be caused by a problem in the VPN transmission and is commonly the result of internet latency or simply that your VPN server has reached capacity. Please try to reconnect to the VPN server. If this problem persists, contact the VPN administrator and analyze quality of network connectivity.*You also might try temporairely completely uninstalling ESET as a test.

Microsoft error codes doesn't really tell you what's wrong. A error code 807 typically is either the client or the server is behind a NAT device and does not pass through GRE protocol 47. If GRE protocol 47 isn't pass through the NAT device you'll get 807. you'll also get 807 if port 1723 isn't forwarded from the NAT device to the VPN server if the server is behind a NAT device. VPN servers usually have packet filters which restrict inbound connection to only PPTP or L2TP.

    That's from my experience.

Hi - did you manage to solve your problem?  Because I have exactly the same issue (and similarly my XP laptop works fine).

    Cheers
