I recently replaced my laptop and have been having problems with the wireless connection at the local library.  Up until last week the wireless was able to connect and only occasionally have the problem with the dns server.  Usually running the diagnose option would eventually resolve the problem with the wireless card being reset.  The past week though it never seems to reset at all and even when I do connect its really slow.  Anyways here the diagnoses details.

Hey Skulker17,

Follow these methods to troubleshoot the issue.

Step 1: Check the following services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup typeshould be automatic.

To check:

1.     Go to start and type services.msc

2.     Select services from the search list.

o    Computer Browser

o    DHCP Client

o    DNS Client

o    Network Connections

o    Network Location Awareness

o    Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

o    Server

o    TCP/IP Netbios helper

o    Workstation

 Step 2: Reset TCP/IP

TCP/IP can sometimes become damaged or corrupted. If you cannot connect to the Internet and you have tried the above method to resolve the problem, TCP/IP might be causing it.

There’s a fix it available to reset TCP/IP automatically.

How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Step 3: Flush your computer's DNS cache.

1.    Go to start and type cmd.

2.    Right-click on cmd from the programs list and select “Run as administrator”.

3**.** Type ipconfig /flushdns.

A message will appear saying that your DNS cache is cleared. Start Second Life. It should run fine this time.

4.****Type ipconfig /registerdns

This command refreshes all DHCP address leases and registers all related DNS names configured and used by the client computer.

Step 4: Update your Network Adapter driver.

Select one of the available options from the link  below and install the correct driver for your operating system.

Intel® WiFi Link 5300 and Intel® WiFi Link 5100 products

I had similar problem, I pressed the "reset" button of my wireless router (and also switching off its power for 15 seconds and then turned it on again) ----- wow, suddenly, everything was alright back to normal !!!!!!!!! May be some corrupted cashe in the wireless route causing the problem. I hope this might work for some, best of luck :)

Woah! You don't want to "RESET" the router. I think you mean switch off the power.

Resetting the router will lose all connection settings and that's another problem altogether.

Sometimes third party firewall cause the problem. Just temporarily disable or uninstall any 3rd party firewall and antivirus. Then check out thoroughly again. I have uninstalled the eset antivirus & firewall. And the problem is gone.  You can try it

I have now spent about 40 hours trying to restore my Internet connection, but to no avail. I have gone through laundry lists of fixes including the one above and finally re-installed windows (7) thinking surely that would correct the problem, but not so. In trying to install the above driver, I am not even sure if that worked. At first I saw a message briefly saying my network adapter could not be found, and then I tried again, and I got no confirmation that the driver got installed.

My question is, since I am able to access the Internet using my girlfriend's laptop via the same router, that (common router for all apartments on my floor) can't be the problem, right? Or could it?

I am at my wit's end and am seriously wondering if I have to retire this less than 2-year-old and otherwise mint condition $850 Sony Vaio already??? I am desperate!
