    HI,

    Method 1:

Check theVolume shadow copy service in services window. To check follow these steps:

    1.      Click on Start

    2.      In the start Search box type Services

    3.      Right Click on – Run as Administrator

Check if the below mentioned services has the mentioned status and start up type.

Volume Shadow Copy Service                   Started              Automatic

Also check the dependency services that are required for Volume Shadows Copy Service to run.

To check that double click on the service and click on the dependency tab.

    Method 2:

Disable the firewall/ anti-virus temporarily installed on your computer and then check if the issue still persists. If the issue resolves, then you might need to uninstall the software and reinstall it back or change the settings and check.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Disable-antivirus-software

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

    Method 3:

Alsocheck a drive for errors: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Check-a-drive-for-errors

    Refer to:

    Hope this information is helpful.

I had the same problem when making a system image.  I tried all three methods, none of them worked for me.  One more observation, my windows 7 had a dual boot with Ubuntu server.  I think the dual boot was the issue.  I tried on two machine with dual boot setup, both failed badly.  And both machine was successfully making system images before I installed the dual boot with Ubuntu.

This is definitely a bug in Windows backup when encounter with dual boot with Ubuntu.

I encountered the same problem when trying to run Win7 and dual boot with Ubuntu on my laptop. A tread on another site suggested checking Disk Management under the Administrative Tools. When installing Ubuntu it had selected a different partition as the active partition. Caution was advised when changing the active partion but I proceeded changing the active partition back to the original and the problem was resolved.

OS = Windows 7 Home Premium.

Volume Shadow Copy Service needs the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider to be started. Unfortunately Computer - Manage - Services does not show this dependency. The error codes don't point to it either.

On one of my three machines the service was disabled, and I couldn't create a system image.

my solution may be helpful to someone out there with the 0x807800A1 error:

after failing to find a solution to the problem online, it dawned on me that the problem started after I installed another os on another hard drive ... so I checked the Bios, and in the boot order, it had changed from disk 0 to disk 5 as the initial boot disk, strange, that, so I changed it back to have the windows os drive as the initial boot disk and it solved the problem, no more errors with disk image backup :)
