If you receive Windows Update error 80244016, 8024402f, or c80003fa while checking for updates, it might be caused by a connection interruption between your computer and theWindows Update servers.

Windows provides a built-in troubleshooting tool that can automatically find and fix some common problems withWindows Update.

Adding to Walter the Traveller's suggestion. 

To troubleshoot the Windows Defender error message, try the following:

Remove the current signature file of Windows Defender.

To do this,

a. Click Start > Run, type **Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}**and then click OK.

b. Open Windows Defender. To do this, click Start, click Programs, and then clickWindows Defender.

c. Check for new definitions. To do this, click the Help options arrow next to the Windows Defender Help icon, click About Windows Defender, and then clickCheck for Updates. 

Try running the update and check if Windows Defender updates fine.
