Using 2 monitors, how can I get 2 different screens?

I've connected a 2nd monitor to my laptop. Is there a way I can see 2 different screens at the same time- one on each monitor? This would be helpful so I don't have to keep minimizing info and bringing it back up. I could just leave it displayed on the 2nd screen.
