    1. Locate the compressed folder that you want to extract files or folders from.
    2. Do one of the following:
      • To extract a single file or folder, double-click the compressed folder to open it. Then, drag the file or folder from the compressed folder to a new location.
      • To extract the entire contents of the compressed folder, right-click the folder, click Extract All, and then follow the instructions.

Windows 7 can do this natively - without effort.

(As could Windows XP and Vista.)

As for other compression methods... 7-zip.org would be my recommendation.

    Hello,

I recently purchased a new laptop running Windows 7 and have attempted to "extract all" files without success.  My old one was Vista - I had no trouble extracting files on it.

I am attempting to extract files from multiple sources - one was a download of files to reinstall software for my Seagate drive.  Another was a zip file of Word docs from a trusted source.

When I click extract all, I get the window asking for the location.  That's fine.  Then when I click ok to approve the extraction, the destination folder opens with a message "This folder is empty."

I cannot drag and drop into the folder.  Though I can see the files, I cannot preview any of the items in the zip folder.

Once I received a windows message asking if I wanted to use these files which may be harmful to my computer, I clicked ok.  Still nothing happens.

    I'm extremely frustrated.

Restore the computer to factory defaults using whatever method the laptop manufacturer gave you.  If it still fails to work, contact the manufacturer as THEY supplied the installation (and likely customized it) that you are using.
