I found this solution and it fixed the problems for me!
It may be due to your audio drivers not supporting the protected audio stream. If you’re like me and upgraded to Windows 8, you might find that there aren’t any newer sound card drivers available. Luckily, there’s an easy solution, assuming you’re comfortable with editing the registry:

Came from an on-line upgrade from Win7. VIA did not provide new drivers yet. XBOX Music works fine now.

It may be due to your audio drivers not supporting the protected audio stream. If you’re like me and upgraded to Windows 8, you might find that there aren’t any newer sound card drivers available. Luckily, there’s an easy solution, assuming you’re comfortable with editing the registry:
- Open regedit and navigate toHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Audio.
- Change the DisableProtectedAudioDG value from 1 to 0 and reboot.
As a side note this problem happened to me on Surface RT. The key didn't exist for me so I created a dword with the above name and a value of 0 after a restart it worked ok again.
