Have been trying to install this since yesterday, I've tried doing clean boot, deleting and re-downloading the update etc. Not sure what else to do, it tells me it's an important update so I need to get this sorted.

I had the same problem and found a solution.

For this update, TEMP file location should be set to default  C:.

I  changed Temp file location from RAM disk to C:\ for this update and it worked.  Thereafter I changed the Temp file location back to RAM disk.

I did finally solve it. I hope this works for you also:

I changed the environment variables TMP and TEMP

so that their values are both c:\

I did it to all four instances, system and user.

The reason that my first attempt failed was that I mistakenly changed them to

c:\temp (after having created that directory). That doesn't work.

So I really hope this helps, I feel your pain : )

    Tom

Sorry I can't be of much more help. I was just randomly trying things and the last thing I did was change those environment variables. One other random thing I tried was to run the Microsoft FixIt program found at this link

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Windows-Update-error-80072efd

It may be just another time waster but perhaps there's something there. It did find errors in my system and I had to run it several times before they all went away. Each time I ran it it told me that it had fixed everything but that was bullshit, running it again showed some of the same errors but fewer than the time before until finally all were gone. It was at that point that I changed the env variables and it worked.

Microsoft must have had one of their interns put this update together.

    best of luck
