Windows Update will not work, getting error 0x80240022

I cannot download Windows Update, either one at a time or in groups. When I try to fix it with MS Security Essentials,  I keep getting one of two error messages: Error Code 0x80070424 or Error Code 0x80240022. I have 27 important updates since June that won't download. Also, my Windows Firewall will not turn on or off properly. Help, anyone?

Thank you for your assistance to my query. I followed your instructions and went to Services menu, where I discovered that Windows Firewall and Background Intelligent Transfer Service are missing from the Services menu. I did change Windows Update and Bitlocker Drive Encryption Service to Automatic and Started, as per Windows 7 Home Premium instructions**. Perhaps the missing entries are the cause of the problem? I do not know how to fix that.**

Thanks again for your help so far.
