We are looking to output information from an in-house application to Microsoft Word. Currently the application uses thousands of merged fields to create legal documents. What is the maximum number of Merge Fields the Word 2016 supports in a single document?

There is no mergefield limit, per se, although there is an overall limit of 2,147,483,647 fields in a document. The more pertinent issue is whether Word can access as many data fields as your source contains. Depending on the data source, the OLE DB driver used for mailmerges may not be able to access more than 255 fields (a limitation that applies to Excel data sources, for example).
