Hello,

I remember I installed Avast Free 2014, then maybe afterwards it caused my apps to show those arrow down signs and not be 'live'. Is it really because of Avast Antivirus?

The Apps Troubleshooter cannot help me.

I had installed Windows 8.1 and had this problem.

Simply uninstalled and then re-installed each one and now the problem is gone.

THIS is the solution to the problem.

You have to manually delete and reinstall each and every app that doesnt't update on its own. Only Microsoft apps show this problem, all the other ones do not need to be reinstalled.

Please note that this problem is NOT related, in any way, with Avast.

I had this same problem and it was caused by avast. Disabling the shields didn't help and I had to remove avast completely, after restarting the computer all of the apps updated without a problem.

Try to remove few apps manually and then download them from the store, I was doing that after removing avast and then in the middle of doing this the store suddenly said that I had 18 updates available. After that I was able to update them all through store.

The instructions on setting the Firewall are incorrect. There is no setting that will simply set the Firewall to allow updates. This behavior just occurred today. Does it occur to Microsoft that there is some undocumented feature or bug here?

I took Avast off as well, rebooted and the problem still exists.

Is that a safe way to run my computer. Not one bit. Anyone without a virus checker is wide open to infections.
