Windows Search Service Windows 8.1

Question

Can someone supply an answer?

Since upgrading to 8.1 i have been unable to turn on the media streaming application.

I have been through all the stages suggested by Windows help, Windows administrative tool, services page, and it tells me ""1068 Network Sharing Service will not start, Windows Search dependency service". 

Next i went to The "Windows Search Service" tried to start via there and it tells me "Error 2" "System cannot find file specified".

Anyone one any ideas??

I'm running a Lenovo 64bit all-in-one.

Never had any problem before Windows Update 8.1 via Windows Store

Hi Alan,

I see that you have followed some suggestions from the previous thread.

I would sugget you to follow these methods and check if it helps.

Method 1:

As you are not able to start Windows Search Service, you would have to check the Dependency service.

To do this, follow these steps.

a.Press Windows key + R on the keyboard.

b.Type services.msc and press OK.

c.Scroll and find Windows Media Player Networking Sharing Service.

d.Right-click and select Properties.

e.Set the Startup type and set it as Automatic.

f.Click Start to start the service.

Now, try to start the Windows Search Service.

**Method 2:**If that does not help, I would suggest you to run an System File Checker (SFC) scan and check if it helps.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system fileshttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833/en-us

I have some good and bad news on this particular problem. The good news is it has been completely resolved on my computer. The bad news is it wasn’t an easy fix. My particular issue was as follows: media streaming was not working because the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service would not start, resulting in the following error code—1068: “Dependency service or group failed to start.” The main Dependency service directly involved here is “Windows Search” which wouldn’t start either.

You can spend all the time in the world looking for a quick fix for this on the net, but you will not likely get anywhere. There is only one way to fix this issue: You need to undertake a “special” re-installation of Windows 8.1 with the guidance of a high-tier Microsoft technician. If you try this on your own, you could very well end up in the same situation. There is no pending update that will fix this. It will not be taken care of until the next major OS upgrade. This problem is unique to 64 bit systems and occurs during the upgrade process from Windows 8 to 8.1.

Even if you don’t use media sharing that much, this problem needs to be taken care of because it negatively impacts on a whole bunch of other Windows 8.1 operations. I was lucky enough to hook up with a very knowledgeable MS technician who knew just what to do.

Note that you will need to enter that in an elevated cmd window (aka Administrator Command Prompt)

I am having the exact same problem on my 64 bit computer. It started after I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. We are not alone; lots of people are having this problem. I think you are on the right track. I believe the problem is related to 2 Dependency services that the Windows Media Player Sharing Service requires: HTTP Service and Windows Search. I don't even have HTTP Service listed in my services, and I get the same message as you regarding a missing Windows Search  file.

I spent 2 and a half hours on the phone yesterday with  Level 1 Microsoft technician, but we got nowhere. I am scheduled to get a call tomorrow from a higher-level specialist who hopefully will be able to resolve this. I will pass along anything I learn.

BTW, we already tried the above suggestions.

Method 1 i have tried, it attempts to start then stops.

Method 2,

I tried this yesterday but wasn't sure of all the statment after running so have ran again and this is the statment:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log WinDir \Logs\CBS\CBS.log.For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.logAny other ideas would be welcome :)
