No one here can advise on licensing issues and would hate to see something go sideways if we did :)

I would like to trial Exchange Online Archiving for Exchange Server. When I try to assign the license to my account I get an error message that says "You can't assign licenses that contain these conflicting services: Exchange Online (Plan 1), Exchange Online Archiving for Exchange Server. Review the services included with each license, and try again."
I use Exchange Online as part of my Office 365 Business Standard account. I believe that this article states that I should be able to use https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/servicedescriptions/exchange-online-archiving-service-description/exchange-online-archiving-service-description#exchange-online-archiving-plans.
Therefore I don't know why I am receiving the error.

Andy David - MVP 157.8K Reputation points MVP Volunteer Moderator2021-02-08T19:47:47.403+00:00 Microsoft 365 Business Standard licenses you for Exchange Online and includes P1 , so thats prob what is throwing that error. Where are your primary Exchange Mailboxes? Still on-prem?
You would probably need the "Exchange Online Archiving for Exchange Online" so there is no conflict in licensing. -

2021-02-08T19:55:23.657+00:00 Also I now see the confusion from my original post - I use Exchange Online from the Office 365 Business Standard Subscription - I have not assigned a separate Exchange Online Plan 1 account to my account though (this comes up as an option for us because some of our users just use Exchange Online Plan 1 and not the Business Standard......sorry for the confusion.

The tougher issue is that licensing can get confusing and each tenant may have something else going on that can't be fixed here.

Eric Yin-MSFT 4,396 Reputation points2021-02-09T08:45:41.72+00:00 Can you reproduce the issue with a new mailbox? Assign Microsoft 365 Business Standard license to it first then assign Exchange Online Archiving for Exchange Online, will same error reported?
And can you post some snapshots of the license page？ In my lab Exchange Online Archiving for Exchange Online is not available, which service are you trying to assign actually?

I have conducted some testing and have concluded that I am required to use a dedicated Exchange Online (Plan 1) account (red circle in screen shot) as opposed to the Exchange Online (Plan 1) account that is included with the 365 Business Standard license - (blue circle in screen shot) to enable Exchange Online Archiving. There are two problems with this approach - number 1 is that when I do this my email does not work anymore and number 2, I shouldn't have to pay for a separate Exchange Online (Plan 1) account when it is included in Business Standard. Any assistance would be gratefully accepted.
