Just got a new computer. Each time I restart the computer I get this window, C:\windows\System32 \cmd.exe . Next comes another window which reads:

C:\program files [x86]\user extensions\client.exe  not found. My question is how can I fix this problem?

Hi,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft community.

An incorrect un-installation may cause this error as it may still be registered in MSConfig to start automatically with the computer or antivirus /antimalware software has properly identified client.exe as an unwanted program and removed it.

In regards to the issue, I require additional information to make sure that helps us to resolve the issue easily:

  1. Have you gone to the address specified in Program Files (86)\Search Extensions to see if the file is present or not?
  2. Have you made any software/hardware changes or windows update on the computer prior to the issue?

Let’s try the following methods and check if it helps.

Method 1: Boot the computer in safe mode and check whether the issue persists, if the issue does not persist then perform Clean Boot and check whether the issue resolves.

Step1: Safe mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. Startup programs don't run in safe mode, and only the basic drivers needed to start Windows are installed. Please click on the mentioned link below.

Start your computer in safe mode

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-safe-mode

(Note: After the troubleshooting, make sure to boot your computer to normal mode)

Step 2: If the issue doesn’t persist try to boot the windows in Clean boot and check if that helps.

Clean boot-   It’s a process where in you can start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs.  A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

To boot Windows in Clean boot please refer the link below.

http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

Note: After Clean boot troubleshooting step, follow the section "How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot" in the provided link to return your computer to Normal startup mode.

Method 2: Run the virus scan

For antivirus scan you can refer this link

http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

Please reply us on the status of the issue to assist you further

Thanks.
