The software update causing the BSOD is kb3088195.

Solution: You need to uninstall the "Lenovo USB blocker" application from the laptop in order to be able to install this security update.

  1. Do not refresh your system, it doesn't help.
  2. After attempting to install this update the system will BSOD and reboot multiple times until it reaches the Recovery Menu.

Use it to start Windows in Safe Mode, option 4.

Windows will reboot and revert all update changes giving you access to your desktop, where you will need to uninstall the above mentioned app.

If this doesn't work for you, use the "WhoCrashed" app to analyze your crash logs and uninstall the driver that's causing you issues.

Not sure which side is responsible for this and why in 2015 we still deal with BSODs, but it's extremely disappointing!

This laptop was bought as a gift for a relative who lives alone at the other end of the country.

Wasted 1 day of my life trying to troubleshoot the issue, I can't imagine doing this over the phone with an elderly person!

Windows detects that it rebooted multiple times, it also detects it was unable to install the update successfully and reverts the changes, why do I need a Recovery menu and why Windows doesn't do all this on its own is beyond me.

Whoo Hoo!!!  It worked!  I removed the "Lenovo USB blocker" and was able to install all of the security updates without the BSOD...Thanks so much for sharing this info.

    Here's an explaination from Lenovo...

Thank you for the suggestion about PC Decrapifier. The application seems very useful.

I was thinking to use it just before I found a comment of someone from Lenovo administration at the Lenovo community site MS-Guy had mentioned.

He says in the comment: Lenovo released "Lenovo USB Blocker version 1.0.0.62", click to download here. You may update "Lenovo USB Blocker" to this version first, then apply KB3088195, there will be no BSOD any more.

Now I am wondering what I should do, remove the USB Blocker with PC Decrapifier or update it to a new version. But another similar problem might occur in the future as long as my pc has this USB blocker. I will try PC Decrapifier first. Then if I still cannot remove it, I will try the USB Blocker update.

    Thank you very much!

I removed EasyCamera but it didn't seem to remove the driver, but when I check the driver in Device Manager the name of it is Lenovo EasyCamera. I just barely tested it and it still appeared to work correctly.

I think removing all the Lenovo bloatware before doing updates could be a practical approach to avoid these errors. Time permitting, it may be better just to do a clean install and only load essential drivers in order to avoid putting any of their software on the computer unless absolutely necessary.

PC Decrapifier does a good job of sorting out what bloatware can be safely removed without compromising drivers or recovery data.

After uninstalling USB Blocker I was able to install all the straggler Security updates without getting the system thread error (On my system I had three security updates, including the one listed in this forum, that wouldn't update without crashing the system and forcing me to undo the changes by booting into safe mode).

I don't really feel USB Blocker is a necessary add-on. This website explains what it's for:

OP means Original Poster, who is the person who started this particular thread of posts. In this case, that's DimitarYosifov.
