F:\ The directory name is invalid

I updated to Windows 10 and now I'm getting frequent error messages saying "F:\ The directory name is invalid" and "G:\ The directory name is invalid" I'm not sure what my F:\ and G:\ drives are. I can't find anything about them on my computer. These error messages pop up out of nowhere. Any idea why I'm getting them or what I can do to stop them?

    Hi Azuch,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community.

Before assisting further, I would like to ask you few questions:

    1. Since when are you facing this issue?
    2. Did you make any recent changes to the PC?

Boot your PC in Safe mode by following the steps from the link below and check if you are facing similar issue.

Safe mode is a diagnostic mode that starts your computer with limited drivers necessary to run Windows. The words Safe Mode appear at the corners of your monitor to identify which Windows mode you are using.

Expand the options to boot into Safe Mode:

To exit from Safe mode follow the steps below:

    1. Open Run command by pressing Windows key + R on the keyboard and type msconfig in the command box.
    2. Under Boot tab uncheck the Safe boot option.
    3. Rebootthe system and check if the changes are effective.

To know more about Safe mode, following is an article on Windows Startup Settings (including safe mode)(Applies to Windows 10 also):

Write back to us with the status of the issue for further assistance. Your reply is most important for us to ensure we assist you accordingly.

    Thank you.

I don't know how long I have been facing the "The directory name is invalid" issue as I have only just come to read some data files from DVD. These are photos from 2014 and earlier.

The DVD player plays my video and audio recordings fine, as well as commercial items. But, if I put in a data disc, the file manager doesn't seem to see the disc and gives the above message.

Having browsed around and read the discussion about safe mode, I tried starting like that. Lo! The disk directories appear and I can copy files from them without difficulty. Of course, I could reboot to safe mode each time I want a file, but that would be ludicrous.

All this suggests to me that there's something wrong with Windows 10.

Is there any way this can be resolved?
