This has been very frustrating, but hopefully it is going in the right direction. I read many of the possible fixes in the forums. I ran the sfc.exe /scannownow, numerous times and tried to get the old hard drive to a state where it could be imaged. All this failed and then I found where SP1 needed to be on the system, downloaded that on my desktop on a DVD. Still no luck installing it on my laptop's new drive.

Then I came across a thread that the Intel Rapid Storage needed updating. Went to the Intel site and found my Pentium T4500, 2.3 Ghz was no longer supported. I found some legacy software and downloaded it, still no luck.

Then I found an address to download a file named, ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp47501-48000/sp47845.exe, I copied it into my browser on the desktop, burned a DVD and installed it on the laptop.

Windows Update works now, and just finished over 230 updates, plus the option to update other Microsoft updates.

Hoping for the best, and if successful, will have to decide what is next.

Plus I've found a new use for all the old useless CD's and DVD's, reflectors for table lamps with new LED bulbs.

    Thanks

Windows 7 is operating fine now. I am still debating on reloading Windows 10 on this machine.
