Is there a way to disable automatic update in Windows 10 Home edition?

I'm facing many troubles every time Microsoft releases an update.

Sometime happens that I leave my computer running for some days and, the most frequent problem is that they shut down my working environment with many virtual machines running, over night, without asking me first if I want to save my job and quit, or just wait for me to come back to check.

Other problems are related with the glitches and bugs shipped with the forced updates.

This last one, 1709, for example, is packed with kernel panics and video cards issues (nevere experienced this before).

I'm quite good keeping up to date with security by myself, I just like to decide if I should risk or not.

I looked for solutions and I just found many different theories, but everything seems to me just an ugly workaround.

I cannot believe there's no official way to achieve this, that's why I'm asking here.

Please I don't want to kill this definitively from my internet AP.

Thanks in advance

Best regards.

Hi doppiabeo, there are 3 steps required to stop Windows 10 Automatic Updates:

    1.

    Open the Settings App

Go to Accounts - Sign-in Options

Choose to sign in with a Local Account rather than a Microsoft Account.

    2.

    In the Settings App

    Go to Network and Internet

Set your WiFi connection as Metered

    3.

Click your Start Button, type services and hit ENTER

Scroll down the list of services to find Windows Update

    Double click the service

If it has started, click 'Stop'

Then you must set its startup type to 'Disabled' - 'Manual' will not do!

    Restart your PC

    That's It!

I'm Greg, a volunteer installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

You can set your connection as Metered and it will stop WIndows Updates and all background services. http://www.windowscentral.com/how-set-ethernet-...

    https://www.guidingtech.com/48828/delay-disable...

Then what I'd do is whenever the latest version Update is released twice a year wait until it is determined to be stable (you can ask here), go to a PC with an unlimited connection and create bootable media for your version using the Media Creation Tool, bring it back and plug it in, open to run it from the desktop to bring you fully up to date with the latest version and all updates. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

Otherwise you can periodically plug in the PC to an unlimited connection to turn off Metered connection and run Updates, hiding any you dont' want using the Hide Updates tool here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f2...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

    Option 1:

Set your Internet connection as metered:

    https://www.groovypost.com/howto/manage-windows...

    Option 2:

Use Active Hours and Restart options:

    https://www.groovypost.com/howto/managing-windo...

    Option 3:

Use Show/Hide Updates tool to block the update:

Is there an option or work around to block updates or hardware drivers that might cause problems?

Yes, Microsoft has released a KB update (KB3073930) that will let users block or hide Windows or driver updates.

You can download it at the following link:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

    Option 4:

    Press Windows key + R

    Type: services.msc

    Hit Enter

    Scroll down to Windows Update

Select it then right click it

    Click Properties

Under the General tab, choose Startup type to DIsabled

    Click Stop

    Click Apply then OK

Option 5: upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, which lets you block updates for up to 8 months and pause Windows Update for up to 35 days.

Open Start > Settings > Update & security > Activation

Click the link ‘Go to the store to upgrade or enter a product key’

Click the $99 button to make your purchase (the price might vary by region or depending on the edition you are upgrading from or upgrading to).

Follow the on screen instructions to make your purchase.

Within 5 to 10 minutes, your system will be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, your personal files, apps and settings preserved.

You won’t get a product key, you get a digital license, which is attached to your Microsoft Account used to make the purchase.
