I just noted I wasn't getting my updates on a Win-7 computer.  Did the procedure you showed here (Debra6 replied on 1/17/18) and now things seem OK  (ASW).

On a few occasions when an optional program (procedure) doesn't work I have found that turning it off and then back on corrects the problem.  It resets a flag in the program that got out of step with life.

Ok, so I found a very simple fix

Go to services (services.msc), stop the windows update service.

Afterwards, go to C:\Windows and delete or rename the SoftwareDistribution folder.

Then, relaunch the service, and a new SoftwareDistribution folder will be made with the new certificate that expires in 2025, afterwards go to windows update and check for updates.

The only downside to this is that the update history will be deleted...
