Unable to apply security updates

Hi there,

Following a recent security scan of our SQL servers, it was noted that KB4458621 and KB4293802 were missing.

I downloaded these and attempted to apply them but was unable to do so. When I ran the update, the dialog box that shows the instances that are available for patching showed the instance, but would not let me select it. Normally, if there is only one instance on a server, this check box is selected by default. There is only one instance on this server.

The current version is SQL Server 2016(SP2-CU15)(KB4577775) Version 13.0.5850.14

This issue occurred trying to apply both patches.

Hi RobertJubb-3334,

As TomPhilips mentioned, each new CU contains all the fixes that were included together with the previous CU for the installed version of SQL Server. So you do not need to and you cannot install previous CU (KB4458621 and KB4293802) on new CU for SQL Server (KB4577775).
And this is the reason that the instance you want to patch does not let you select it.

it was noted that KB4458621 and KB4293802 were missing.

That are once from 2018, your patch level is Sep 2020, see https://sqlserverbuilds.blogspot.com/
