Hello,

In the last week, we've found an issue where the settings app crashes when attempting to change the default browser from Edge to Firefox. This has happened on multiple computers. It happens when attempting the change both on the regular default programs page and on the set defaults by file extension. It also happens if I attempt to change the video player default. The program pauses for a second, then the window closes with no error message.

Event Log message is:

Faulting application name: SystemSettings.exe, version: 10.0.16299.15, time stamp: 0x7640753d

I believe this might be a result of a recent OS update??

Found a solution,

  1. Goto Settings\Apps & features then search for the app causing an issue ie edge and then click on Advanced Options
  2. Select Reset and then after the reset has completed you can then successfully change the default browser again. This also works if you have issues changing the default apps for Video Player, Photo Viewer etc ie after doing a repair on the default Video Player or Photo Viewer you can then change the default app for these also

Working on that now. I'm creating a new image in audit mode on one machine and reimaging a higher priority computer again with my existing image that I won't run updates on. I'm a one man shop in a small company, so I don't have gobs of time.

What if you perform a plain vanilla install?

Yes, we did. We have several in production that are working fine. But I am building new computers for new hires and I've come up with this issue on two of them with two different images. It's the first issue we've had. The only common denominator is that they were updated as part of the build process, then, when we are setting up the user profile, we can't change the default web browser.

So, you are running Windows 10 in an organization? Didn't you do any pilot testing before deploying Windows 1709 widely? With Microsoft's new feature update policy, you should be very careful with installing new releases. In fact, you should still be on 1607 and wait until the next Long Term Client Release in 2019.
