Microsoft sculpt ergonomic keyboard waking up my screen

Question

Since the windows update to 1709, I have this complicated issue with Microsoft Keyboard/Mouse and Screen Sleep:

Set up:

Asus Laptop nvidia 1070

Dell 2nd screen through HDMI

Microsoft sculpt ergonomic keyboard and mouse using dongle into USB 3 port.

My 2 other USB 3 ports are not used

Using Dell screen only, laptop screen off.

Screen sleep set to 5 mins and PC sleep set to 10 mins.

All drivers up to date

Problem:

As soon as the screen (Dell) goes to sleep, within 10 seconds, it wakes up.  This keeps happening and it even prevents the laptop from going to sleep.

Investigation:

-I did powercfg -lastwake and it shows "Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.0 (Microsoft)" which I think is the usb 3 controller for all the ports.  

-I looked for the "Allow this device to wake up the computer" on all my input devices and made sure they are unchecked.   I verified this by trying to wake up the laptop using the microsoft mouse or keyboard and I couldn't.  I can only wake up the laptop using the laptop keyboard.

-I did not have this issue before 1709 and I do not have this issue with my other set of Logitech mouse/keyboard combo.

Workarounds: I'm able to avoid this issue with a few workarounds:

1. Simply unplugging the dongle to disable the keyboard and mouse solves the issue.
2. Keeping the dongle plugged, but switching the screen to laptop only. i.e Dell screen disabled.  In this case, the laptop screen does NOT come back from sleep.  If I choose duplicate screen or Extend screen, the problem returns.
3. If I change the sleep settings to have the laptop sleep first then the monitor (Dell), then the problem goes away.  So, laptop sleep set to 5, monitor sleep set to 10.  Once the laptop goes to sleep, I think it activates the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" and turns all devices off.

Sorry for the long description, and I know I can work around the issue, but it shouldn't happen in the first place.  I don't have this issue with Logitech, and I did not have it before Windows 1709.

I have this exact problem. I found that as a workaround, I can get the screens to stay sleeping by unchecking "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" on the Power management tab for either the "Microsoft Hardware USB Keyboard" or Microsoft Hardware USB Mouse" in Device Manager->Human Interface Devices.

I have the EXACT same issue. I am running an Intel Skull Canyon with the latest Windows 10 and a Microsoft Sculpt keyboard. I downloaded the Windows Performance Analyzer to debug the issue. I used the following command to generate a energy trace of the system:

powercfg /energy /trace /d c:\PerfLogs /duration 60

I forced the monitor to go into sleep state (via reassigning the "power button" event and pushing it) after trace collection started.

The image below shows a causality even. It is between a DState transition event from the Sculpt keyboard (bottom signal, highlighted red), and the Display state (top row, colored cyan). 

We can clearly see cause and effect relationship which I pointed out with the orange arrows. the Name of the device corresponds to the Sculpt keyboard. I have already isolated and turned off all HID based wakeup events, and I have verified that this problem goes away when I remove the USB dongle for the Sculpt keyboard.

Also, this is after doing a complete fresh reinstall of windows, and an update of the "Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center" which has the latest drivers for the Sculpt keyboard. It doesn't matter which type of monitors are connected (with drivers, or generic), as the behavior is the same and it comes from keyboard wakeup.

Someone technical from Microsoft should investigate this, please. I hope it doesn't get routed to a "social media" frontline person who tells us to go check the settings in control panel. I am a literate, technical expert, engineer and programmer.

Wow, thank you for all this work to prove it's an issue with the Sculpt Keyboard/dongle.  I still have the issue and it really bothers me, it might shorten the life of my laptop as it keep it awake.

As you mentioned, I hope a Microsoft engineer looks at this.
