How do I add a new user for a folder security icon.  When I click on add I get I get the screen below but I can not seem to add a new user.  I would like to add a new user name  that I can use on my 3 PCs so that can all of the PCs have access to the folder and only the 3 PCs.  When ever I create a new name I get a message that the object named cannot be found.

Please advise

"So I did not have "everyone" in the root of c:.  I already had "Authenticated Users"

That's OK then. I don't know why C:\Test2 got "Everyone" instead of "Authenticated Users".

"I did check the full control for "Authenticated Users" in the root directory and I got some error message for folders like the recycle folder and program folders."

On root directory C:\ only last setting "Special permissions" is default.

"I added "Authenticated Users" to the document folder and gave full control."

If you are only user who need to get access to that folder this is not necessary.

You have access to C:\Users\Neil... by default. I you go to another computer and sign in there as Neil then you have access to that shared folder.

If you want that another person have access to that same folder then:

    • That person need to use your credentials to get access to that folder from another computer or
    • You have to create own account to that another person to your computer with same credentials he/she have in her own computer. And then add that name or "Authenticated Users" (=All users who have account in that computer) to security settings.

Okay, what do you mean that person (different than my sign in) needs to use my credentials?  When I tried accessing the folder from another PC I did not get any prompt for user id and password.

"When I tried accessing the folder from another PC I did not get any prompt for user id and password. "

Did you get that access? Credentials are not required because you have user ID on both computers.

"Okay, what do you mean that person (different than my sign in) needs to use my credentials? "

That another person have to prove rights to access to that folder if he/she doesn't have account on that computer where that shared folder is. This is that security in sharing what you were looking for.

I am only user on my home network and I have same UID and password on all PC's so I don't have to use any credentials when using shares between computers. If I create "Test User" to laptop and sign in with that UID then "Test User" need to use my real credentials to get access shared folders from desktop (Test User don't have UID in Desktop).

How does the "other person" prove they have the rights.  In actuality I am the other person on each PC or my wife and have no problem with sharing any log in info

"Other person" prove those right by entering correct credentials (given by you) if Windows ask those, but if you and your wife have access to those shares then is there any issues anymore?
