Hi guys,

I have 2-nodes Storage Spaces Direct failover cluster.
Could you please advise how to properly patch both nodes.

Thank you.

    Hi,

Do you install CAU on the cluster? If yes, we may use CAU wizard to install updates on the cluster nodes.

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/failover-clustering/cluster-aware-updating

If we didn't install CAU in the cluster, you may refer to the following article to learn how to update S2D cluster nodes offline:

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/maintain-servers

    Thanks for your time!
    Best Regards,
    Anne

    Hi,

I tested the 2 node S2D cluster (Server 2016) in my lab.

According to the link I provide above, I try to drain one node in the cluster, it succeed, then I use powershell comamnd to get virtual disk, the result like below:

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/maintain-servers

Incomplete or Degraded Operational Status is normal when nodes are shutting down or starting/stopping the cluster service on a node and should not cause concern. All your volumes remain online and accessible.

Then, we can path the drain node, install updates and restart.

After then, follow the resume steps in the link to resume the node.

So, the steps in the link are safe to path two-node S2D cluster.

    Thanks for your time!
    Best Regards,
    Anne

    Hi @Xiaowei He ,

I'm aware of CAU and it is not installed on the S2D failover cluster in question.
The main reason is that many articles say that CAU behavior is not compatible with S2D.
Implicitly it is proved in article https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/get-started-19/whats-new-19 (Cluster Aware Updating supports Storage Spaces Direct).
In the second article the process is described for 4-nodes S2D failover cluster.
I don't know what will happen if I one node out of two is paused.
(I mean would that bring the whole failover cluster and storage offline).

    Regards,
