Using an Access database over vpn

My shared database works well over an internal network, but is practically unusable over the vpn connection. Are there any guidelines about data transfer speed required for using an Access database over vpn? Current transfer speed on the vpn is only around 10Mbytes per minute.

Typically, you use a VPN connection when you are not connected to your LAN, and thus connection over a WAN for which Access is not an option.  Access databases are solely made to be used over wired LAN connections.
