New Pens Gallery in your Draw tab

Hi, I’m Tucker, a Program Manager on the Graphics team.

Starting in Version 1706 (Build 8229.2056) in PowerPoint 2016, Word 2016, and Excel 2016 for Windows Desktop and the OneNote Store app, we’re rolling out a new Pens Gallery and new pens, and we’d like our Insiders to get the first look.

When you look at the Draw tab you’ll immediately see that the look of the pens have changed.

We’ve moved to a new model that lets you add custom pens, each with its own properties like thickness and color.  This lets you set up a collection of pens customized to your needs.  Best of all, in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint your custom pens roam across apps and devices, so you can create a virtual “pen case” that travels with you.

But what would a better pens gallery be without more options for pens?  We’ve also add eight new ink effects for pens that let you add more spice to your digital ink.  Add a little more excitement to a presentation with metallic ink or accent a document about Mars with the Galaxy Pen.

Coming soon will be a realistic pencil to make your sketches or notes look more like they’ve been hand drawn.  With the newly-announced Surface Pro and its new pen, Office’s pencil will even support tilt.

We’ll also be adding new pens in the future, so don’t hesitate to let us know if there’s a type of pen you’d really like to see.  As always, we welcome your feedback.

Have fun!

Scenarios to try

  • Change the order of your pens – Click on a pen and drag it to the position you want.
  • Change an existing pen – Click on a selected pen to bring up its settings to change color or width.
  • Try all of the new pen effects – Add some flair to your documents.
  • Use your roamed pens – Once you’ve customized your pens in Word, PowerPoint, or Excel your pen gallery will be shared across the apps, even on other machines where you’re logged into Office 365 (note that it may take several minutes for settings to sync from the cloud).

Requirements

  • A pen-and-touch or touch-only device (while not on remote desktop)
  • Windows 10 RS1 RTM ("Windows 10 Anniversary Update") (Build 14393) or above

Maybe you can provide a reply to this old question:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_word-mso_win10/ink-writing-looks-jagged-low-resolution-in-word/76e11833-6eef-4a9f-8dc6-d41b6833f51b

The question is why is ink lower resolution, more jagged, in Word than in OneNote?
