How to keep sensors alive when you turn your hand and screen is off?

Hello,
I develop app that measure your bpm and inactivity (gyroscrop data). My problem is, that when you turn your hand and screen is off, for example when you walking, that gyroscrope sensors are "dead".
Maybe I have two questions:
1 - it is possible to keep screen always on?
2 - it is possible to keep gyroscrope sensors working when you are walking?
