Error with SSRS 2019 download

Hi.

I am trying to download a report from SSRS 2019 in word format and fails with error as below:

An error occurred during rendering of the report. (rrRenderingError)

The type initializer for 'MS.Utility.EventTrace' threw an exception.

Requested registry access is not allowed.

Same case with Excel. Only PDF works.

The cases when I am able to download in word format is when I remove the execution account that is used for the reports.

Other case is when I use the same execution account in the service account. This also works.

But this seems like a workaround and in our organization we have service account as a Group Managed Service account that needs to be used for reporting service. The execution account is different and its an application account that we are using. This execution account has admin access on the server and appropriate SQL Server access as well.

I am thinking if there is some other permissions that needed for the execution account? Or anything else that you guys know of ? Let me know please

thanks

    Hi @tom geo ,

I did some research online that a few people also had the same issue.

They mentioned that with Process Monitor (procmon) showed ReportingServicesService.exe getting an ACCESS DENIED error for the following key. This key is only accessible while SSRS is running and disappears when it is not. Changes made to its permissions are retained.

    Computer\xxxx\xxx\Software\Microsoft\Avalon.Graphics

You may grant the execution account (not the account that runs the service) Read access to this key to see if the issue can be resolved.

    Hi @Zoehui-MST,

Thanks for the reply. The method you said above worked has worked! I was able to get the option to download the report in .docx format.
I will now talk to the management and see if this option to update permissions in registry change is acceptable. Also do you know why this happened? It never happened with SQL Server 2014 , just we noticed this issue with SQL Server 2019 server. Any specific reason you know?

    Thanks a lot!
