I'm trying to find information on MicrosoftEdgeWebview2Setup.exe. I'm IT for a company with about 100 Win 10 PCs and this executable has been alerted in my security system. My understanding is that this executable would run unattended for the update of a browser-based webview app or MS Store app. Is that true? Is there a way to check store app updates and web app updates to correlate with security alerts? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    The file name belongs to the legit Microsoft Edge but cybercriminals will become really tricky and based on the file name itself it is not possible to determine whether it is safe or not.
    You may collect sample of suspicious files and submit them to VirusTotal:
    https://www.virustotal.com/gui/
    You may also contact the security provider where detects it as suspicious behavior and submit sample to them and it might be a false-positive detection.

    Thanks for your quick response.
    Is my understanding that his could be a developer pushing and update or a MS store app update correct?
    If so, do you know of a log where I can see these updates? I don't see anything in event logs.
    Trend Micro is currently blocking MicrosoftEdgeWebview2Setup.exe, so I may not even see anything in logs.

    @Doug Catiller ,
    You had asked, "My understanding is that this executable would run unattended for the update of a browser-based webview app or MS Store app. Is that true? Is there a way to check store app updates and web app updates to correlate with security alerts?"

    It depends on which type of webView2 installer you are using. There are different types of installers are available to download and each has its own advantages.

    Stay compatible in Evergreen mode: The Evergreen WebView2 Runtime is kept up to date to provide you with the latest features and security fixes. To ensure your app stays compatible with the web.

    Fixed Version distribution mode: For constrained environments with strict compatibility requirements, consider using the Fixed Version distribution mode. Choose and package a specific version of the WebView2 Runtime using the Fixed Version distribution mode. You may specify the timing of Runtime updates for your app. The Fixed Version distribution mode does not receive any automatic updates. Plan to update your app and the Runtime.
