Creating a disk from a snapshot's exported blob SAS-uri

Danny Shemesh 21 Reputation points

Hey !

Generally, disks can be created (imported) from a given source, such as a blob uri;
this is possible with the equivalent REST call of az disk create --source [--source-storage-account-id]

I was wondering if it would be possible to create a managed disk from a managed blob sas uri generated when exporting a given snapshot;
that is, the token one may get with the equivalent REST call of az snapshot grant-access.

It seems that what is suggested in most places is that one should take the generated blob URI -
and upload it to a self-managed storage account via AzCopy or other copying mechanisms.

Exporting a snapshot already gives me an (azure-managed, albeit) blob URI -
it would've been great if I could've just used that URI to instantiate a disk from directly,
without copying it over.

This is useful for very large disks (>= TB, for instance) - in that case there's a significant overhead in copying (both COGS & time-wise).

It would be neat to know if there's a way in which I could utilize the SAS uri given by exporting my snapshots, instead of copying the vhd over.

Appreciate your time !

    Hey @deherman-MSFT , long time !

    There are a couple of related issues opened in the feedback site:

    I wondered if we can ping the product team to check them out and respond on one of them ?
    enabling this flow would really ease up disk-imports, I believe.

    Thanks a ton,
