Issues while sharing external drive over the network

Good day

Please help.

I have 2 external hard drives connected to one PC, I am using 2 PC's.  I am trying to share folders between PC's.  Trouble is, the one ext hard drive I got shared as a whole - i.e. the hard drive d is fully shared, all content visible and accessible from PC 2.  Hard drive f keeps giving a message "you don't have permission...", however, when I share individual folders in hard drive f, the individual folders are all fully accessible.   What am I doing wrong?

Please help, the sharing settings on both hard drives are exactly the same.

Thank you so much

Disri

Hi Disri,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that you are facing issues while accessing the files shared over the network.

The issue might be because the hard drive doesn’t have the appropriate permissions. I would suggest you to provide full permissions to the hard drive and see if that helps.

Kindly follow the steps mentioned below to provide permissions.

  1. Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
  2. On the right hand pane click on This PC.
  3. Now right click on the external drive and click on Properties at the bottom of the context menu.
  4. Click the Security tab, and click on Advanced. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  5. Click on Change beside owner.
  6. Type User Account Name, click on Check Names and click on OK.
  7. Click on Add.
  8. Click on Select a Principal.
  9. Type User Account Name, click on Check Names and click on OK.
  10. Click on Full Control.
  11. Click on OK.
  12. Now, click on Apply and then click on OK.

Note: User Account Name is the name of the user account you are logged in to.

After providing the permissions try sharing the drive again and see if that helps.

If the issue persists, please get back to us with the results of the troubleshooting steps to assist you further.
