External Harddisk Device was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match.

Question

I'm running Windows 10 Pro 32 bit Winversion 1909 and have a Western Digital My Book  Essential external harddisk connected via USB. Windows explorer cannot detect it but its detected in device manager, disk management, diskpart and taskbar safely remove device.

In diskpart, its shown as status online,  size 0 B, free 0 B.

In disk management  its shown as disk 2, unknown, not initialized. Right clicking it "initialize" is greyed out and under properties general settings shows "This device is working properly". Under "Volumes"  it shows type unknown, status not initialized, partition style not applicable, capacity 0 mb, unallocated space 0 mb, reserved space 0 mb and events shows.

I have run sfc /scannow and no problems were detected. Please advise further actions to resolve this. Thanks.

Originally  file explorer could detect my ext. harddisk and detected no errors when I did a disk check but after shutting down my laptop with it still attached, it  could no longer be detected when I switch on my laptop again. In the taskbar it can recognize it as  My Book.

I have reset my laptop and the "not migated" is gone but my ext.ernal WD harddisk is still not detected in file explorer but detected in disk management "unknown" "not initialized" and when clicking initialize, error message under virtual disk manager shows "incorrect function"

I have seen this behavior reported on 1909, 1903, & 1809 and it does not appear to be the result of a Windows Update.

In some cases you can resolve this issue by following these steps:

1. Remove the USB device from Control Panel > Devices and Printers
2. From an elevated Command Prompt type the following and hit Enter: Net stop DsmSvc

You might see the following message: “The Device Setup Manager service is not started.” This message is expected if the service has already been stopped

3. Type the following and hit Enter: Net Start DsmSvc
4. Plug in the USB device and check if it shows with the correct icon

If the steps above fail to resolve the issue, then follow these steps:

1. Remove the USB device from Control Panel > Devices and Printers
2. From an elevated Command Prompt type the following commands and hit Enter after each one of them:
3. Net stop DsmSvc - (You might see the following message: “The Device Setup Manager service is not started.” This message is expected if the service has already been stopped)
4. Pushd %programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\DeviceMetadataCache\dmrccache\en-USRd f4e323bf-0f31-42b6-9ad6-5d5382d3fa83 /s /q
5. Net Start DsmSvc
6. Plug in the USB device and check if it shows with the correct icon

There is another way this behavior can be resolved. If a device is 'upgraded' from one version to the next version, the metadata will be rebuilt and the expected icon will return.

Did you back up any files from the external on a PC which could read it, or is it not read anywhere? Initializing it will destroy the data.

What you report makes me think the drive may be bad. Run hard drive diagnostics:
