Black Screen with Cursor and Download Folder freezing

Today while working on the computer I encountered an issue while downloading files from the internet and grabbing them from the download folder! This happened 3 times where I received a black screen and the only the cursor was visible. When opening the Download Folder the loading icon would keep going eventually leading to "not responding", after that the black screen came on. Is there a permanent fix for this? I just upgraded the computer and have done some cleaning up to make the computer run faster and so far it's been working great. However today I did download some adobe presets and effects and from what i could see they were from reliable sites. I hope this is not a virus?

I did some research and found a temporary fix, but this has happened 3 times and every time I go to the download file it is slow and becomes "not responding". I'm sure the community is aware of this issue? I saw lot's of google results about it.

What would you recommend so i don't get the black screen and so I can easily get into the downloads file without it becoming unresponsive?

I'm running Windows 10 64 bit

Thank you for your sound advice!!  :)

Thank you for the reply Eberwurz. I recently upgraded to windows 10 after doing a factory reset on the computer due to a hardware failure. I also upgraded to the C: Drive to a SSD and installed Windows 10 on that so the computer runs better.

    • Actually it's not just one specific file, but when trying to open a PDF or Microsoft Word Documents, even sometimes when opening a folder. I can't really be to specific to a file, but when performing these basic tasks i am getting lots of slowdown, lag, and unresponsiveness.
    • Just got a File System Error as well when trying to open a PDF. I have a screenshot (posted below) i took for you to look at!
    • FIX? I recently came across an article that say we could do a refresh of windows, reinstall with out losing anything. I read this could be a good idea if nothing else works? What do you think?

Is it normal to have slow loading on simple tasks like loading a folder or Word document? is this an easy fix?

Thank you for the link for (virustotal) I made a note of that to use in the future!

    Thank you and God Bless

    Hello PierreRoussel,

thank you for providing this question.

I am a seasoned Windows expert with almost a decade in usage and support experience and hope to resolve your problems quickly.

First of all what do you mean by you did some cleaning? Some automatic cleaner tool or you handpicking software to not being run on startup and alike. I ask because the automatic cleaner tools are known to cause problems often.

This aside i assume you open the file by double clicking it and then the computer goes into a not responding state? Can you rightclick the file and select propertys, take a screenshot with Win + Shift + S and send it to us?

It is always possible to get a virus when you download something from unreliable sources and execute it. Once it is code and once it is malicious you pretty much lost.

You can try uploading the file you suspect of giving you a virus to virustotal:

    https://www.virustotal.com/gui/home/upload

Its gonna be cross scanned by 70 av engines which each tell their result. There can be false positives but you can post the result here. In cases you suspect your device compromised i highly recommend to backup using a live linux and do a clean install.

If you consider your problem solved it would be very good if you marked the answer which helped you so others can find and use this thread.

If this didn't solve your problem or you need further assistance please answer in this thread and i would be happy to help.

    kind regards

    F. Grobusch
