Does Downstream Replica WSUS server have to join the domain?

I want to set up a Downstream Replica WSUS on DMZ for external domain computers to get updates. Does Downstream Replica WSUS have to be a member server of the same domain with the upstream WSUS server? Can it be a standalone server? Thanks,

No. As long as the Downstream Replica WSUS could connect to the upstream WSUS server will be OK.Can it be a standalone server?
