ARM Templates for non Microsoft ARM templates

Is there a way in which you can download the ARM template schema for a non Microsoft resource (Marketplace items), so that I can include them within my CI/CD Infrastructure as Code templates

@Cairn-3868 Yes, you can. Currently, there are two ways to export a template:

  • Export from resource group or resource: This option generates a new template from existing resources. The exported template is a "snapshot" of the current state of the resource group. You can export an entire resource group or specific resources within that resource group.

  • Export before deployment or from history: This option retrieves an exact copy of a template used for deployment.

Further, Resource Manager enables you to pick one or more resources for exporting to a template. You can focus on exactly the resources you need in the template and customize or reuse it accordingly. You can also use Azure CLI, Azure PowerShell, or REST API.

This article explains each option in detail: Single and multi-resource export to a template in Azure portal

Please also note the known limitations as well. Do let us know if you have further questions.

Sorry I think you have missed the question, I want the Schema template not the resource. This way I can workout what parameters / properties exist and restrictions / data types that are used.

@Cairn-3868 Apologies if my previous response wasn't clear. Yes, by template, I was referring to the Azure Resource Manager Template containing the resource schema and properties. :)

For example, to export the ARM template for an Ubuntu 18.04-LTS Server, the following options are available:

Hope this helps. Do let us know if this does not satisfy your requirement, or if you are looking for something different.

Thanks for this, do you have to use the portal to do this, and can you also get the list of marketplace offerings without having to view them manually. The ultimate goal would be to get al list of all the marketplace offerings and using ARM templates establish the values required, set and then provision

@Cairn-3868 Thanks for the response. AFAIK, there isn't an API that can get you all of the Marketplace offers, but you can get a summarized list of offers under a specific publisher's namespace with the Retrieve offers API. Note that this would only return brief details like the status of the offer, its GUID and version information, and not all of the information needed to automate your requirement end-to-end out of the box.

@Cairn-3868 Also, on a side note, I'd like to let you know that questions related to the Azure Marketplace are not currently supported on the Microsoft Q&A platform. I would recommend posting your question in the following forums where the Azure Marketplace community is actively answering questions:
